Tom Crandon – Orthodontist – Cardiff

Mark says

“When Tom walked in back in August 2009 weighing 21 stone i knew this would be my biggest challenge yet after 4years in the fitness industry. I knew that if i could help Tom totally transform himself and provide evidence via photos on my website, that it would prove that ANYTHING is possible and thus encourage others with huge obesity problems to act. It’s been a long road but also great fun to get Tom to where he is now – he’s worked bloody hard, but so have I!! At times, (and I’m sure Tom won’t mind me saying this) i felt like i was banging my head against a brick wall trying to stress the importance of good nutrition to him. But he’s finally got it and to see the change in Tom and his whole life gives me such pleasure – we have become great friends and i love continuing to help him reach his ultimate goal which is now only 2 stone away!”

Tom says

“I’ve lost 5 stone in 10 months and my life has been totally transformed! (See the before and after pictures to prove just how much I’ve changed!)

I have learnt that Nutrition is key to a healthy mind and body.  Health can be improved by exercise but with the correct Nutrition and Exercise the results you can achieve are phenomenal.

Before I stared this new lifestyle I don’t think I ever drank a glass of water.  Now I’m drinking around 4 litres of water during the day and feel rotten without it.

The foods that I used to eat used to give me short term happiness; this was the inevitable cause of my demise and weight gain.  It took me a few months to realise that bad food didn’t make me happy, in fact, quite the opposite.

To say that Mark has changed my life is an understatement.  Before meeting Mark I was morbidly obese, constantly tired and constantly grouchy.  I took no pride in myself, and even though I was very sociable in and out of work I was unhappy and lacked confidence.  I would shroud my lack of confidence with flippant remarks about myself or other people and have a generally ‘cocky’ demeanour.

Losing 5 stone couldn’t have been done without Mark’s help.  He has remained supportive, focused, and realistic and above all has never waned in enthusiasm for the love of his job and results nutrition and exercise can achieve.

I haven’t always been the perfect client either!  There are times when my weight loss plateaus and Mark continues to support me and point me in the right direction for results again!

As a direct result of my weight loss and improved fitness I have become a different person in a good way!  I sleep better, concentrate more and am a more pleasant person to be around.  Frequently friends tell me that even though I was nice before I have now become a nicer and more level headed character and less judgmental. Comments like this even though gratefully received it just makes me look back at what I was like before in disgust and horror.

My housemate whom I’ve known for 14 years and have lived with for 5 years says that she loves me more than ever now, the nice Tom predominates over the ghastly Tom!

Not everyone I’m sure is like me when overweight but only now that I have lost weight and gained a moderate level of fitness do I realise how unhappy I was before.

Friends and colleagues alike are now asking me questions like how much weight more weight do I want to lose and how long will I keep up the personal training sessions. My reply has changed since the start. When I started it was ‘until I’m thin’. Now it’s a more realistic ‘ I don’t think I’ll ever stop the sessions because it makes me feel good about myself, gives me a sense of direction and a sense of control over how I feel’.

I have achieved I’m sure what would be interpreted as great things over the years both professionally and personally.  The achievement of a great weight loss far outweighs all that I have achieved in the past. I have never felt this good about myself and my current situation before, and I know it’s a consequence of good fitness and nutrition.  Both of which I never would have appreciated without Mark.

By going to Mark for PT sessions I have gained a great personal trainer, a confidante and above all a good friend.

Laura Beard (20) – Student and Model
& Lowis Elmer (21) – Student

Laura says....

“We love the motivation we get from the sessions and we always look forward to it because it’s not just a slog at the gym it’s banter and laughs. Plus we’ve both got bikini bodies now!

Personally I’ve learnt so much about different exercises for different muscles which I didn’t have any clue about before I came. I used to just do some sit ups or cardio, but now I know a much bigger range of exercises with and without equipment and exactly what they’re for.

Apart from being more toned I also feel so much healthy – I don’t get so shamefully out of breath when I’m dancing or getting to the 3rd floor in uni.

I’m much more confident with my body and feel much more energetic and enthusiastic about exercise. (I never would have sent the photo for any modelling last year as I knew my body shape wouldn’t even get a glance and now I love what I have – I’m not stick thin and I wouldn’t want to be ☺ )

A year on and myself and Lowis are still going strong, this says a great deal about the standards that are kept. Thank you Mark!”

Simon Player - Bridgend

For the last 8 days I have been trying out a new diet which has been specifically designed for me by a Mark. He knew I was serious about losing weight and had struggled with weight gain and loss. I am actually stunned at the results already the weight is literally dropping off me and can already notice my clothes... feeling looser and the old pot belly disappearing. Mark is the man behind the diet and nutrition plan which he has prepared for me to follow. I don’t feel hungry as I am eating so often and feel really positive about and am focused and motivated to reach my target weight. I have lost more weight than days I have been dieting which is amazing as I have tried every diet in the book and whilst I have lost weight before, I haven’t felt as good or positive as I do at the moment. I have a personal training session with Mark in the morning where he is going to devise a fitness routine for me to improve my overall fitness and increase my weight loss even further. It is clear that Mark has gone from strength to strength since starting his own business a few years ago and is always educating himself to enable him to provide better advice on nutrition and fitness to his clients. You only need to look at his website to see how he has had such a positive effect on so many people; I just want to say a big thanks to him.

I trained with Mark 3 times a week during the summer of 2009 and loved the intensity! Not only did Mark help me get ripped abbs (which was my goal) I also became more focused on my university work and felt more energized and vibrant in my everyday life. On Sundays Mark used to open the gym just for us after closing times, we would get the music turned up loud, train together and ‘push the limits’ – I LOVED IT!!!

Richard Reardon – Priest – Formerly of Cardiff

Sorry that I haven't been in touch with you for some time but I hope this message finds you well. I really miss those Saturday afternoons, when I used to tell people about what we did I could literally see their jaw drop. I would describe boot camp with two simple words, wonderful & terrible. The mileage was becoming too much for me and I was finding that the Saturday afternoon was becoming quite pressurized due to my commitments in the early evening. I would like to thank you for those times, I love your enthusiasm and passion for peoples development. I hope this year will be a continuation of your success,

With every good wish for your future, Richard.

Following on from a back operation in February 2007, feeling out of shape and having put on over 2 stone, I decided that I needed some help. I contacted Fitness and Motivation, after looking at several fitness websites. I arranged for a free consultation, to assess what my goals were, but more importantly to me, I wanted to see if the trainer was someone that I would feel comfortable with, as to me this is an important part of training.

It was clear to me from the start that not only did Mark clearly know his stuff, but he had a real passion for fitness and I would feel comfortable with him training me. He set out the initial plan to condition my body ready for the serious training. Training at Train Station 2 is a really good gym and when I say gym that what I mean, it's not a health club. It allows for a variety of functional training using a truck tyre, beer keg and well as the running track around the edge.

It's fair to say that during the conditioning phase I was pleasantly surprised with the variation of the function exercise that I was performing. This variation continued when we moved on to weight lighting which is something that I particularly enjoyed, especially when Mark join in, which gave the extra encouragement to push that bit harder to lift heavy weights.

Moving on to the group sessions which are the Saturday boot camps, what a good idea, getting a group of like minded people together to exercise. Again having the exercised based games and challenges provide that extra motivation.

Mark also actively encourages his clients to participate in local events such as the Cardiff Love Run and my favourite the Man V Horse race which pits men against horses over 26 miles in the Welsh mountains. I think I should point out that for the Man V Horse event my roles was purely as a spectator!

During the time that I trained with Mark (2 ½ years) he not only provided the support and technical knowledge in the gym he backed it up with life style and nutritional advise with the saying “you can't out train a bad diet” All of which helped me achieve my goals of bulking up muscle mass and reducing fat.

To sum up training with Mark, its varied and rewarding with a trainer who knows his stuff and how to achieve the required results as long as your prepared to put in the effort.

Catherine Duffield (26) Actress & Singer - Cardiff (Sept 2009)

I have been training with Mark for 4 months. I saw results very quickly and lost 9.9 pounds in my first month. Altogether so far I have lost 19 pounds and can highly recommend Mark for his pure unwavering passion and commitment he has to his clients. You won’t find anyone more passionate about helping you achieve your goal.Although I have been active from a very young age I have always battled with my weight and had never really been happy with my figure. I’d always felt that I was a couple of stone over my ideal weight and I’d tried everything to shift it but nothing seemed to work. I always felt my training lacked any level of direction which was due to a lack of knowledge.

I decided to take drastic action and looked to the internet for some local personal trainers. I found Mark and he instantly stood out for his passion and enthusiasm. I contacted Mark on the phone and on hanging up I couldn’t wait to get started and I hadn’t even been to his gym yet! I went along for a consultation and afterwards watched a boot camp session; although it looked very challenging, I couldn’t wait to join in. Now I go every week and it’s a fantastic way of meeting new people whilst challenging oneself. I’ve even discovered my competitive streak which I never knew existed before!

I am now hooked and I can finally control my cravings and not eat numerous sweet foods throughout the day, i.e. chocolate!! When you put the hard work in and adhere to the training regime the motivation to succeed takes over. I always had a problem with resisting chocolate and cakes, now I have the willpower to walk past them in the shop, which was something I could never do before. Mark has helped me understand how much of an important factor nutrition is, which has to be carefully controlled in order to lose the pounds and assist in healthy weight loss. Mark’s simple ‘10 rules’ are easy to follow and very effective. His style of functional training is tough and challenging but addictive as he makes it fun. I never get bored and lose interest, which I suppose was a real obstacle before.

Most importantly and quite personal to me, the training has had an immense effect on my confidence and happiness, friends want to know my secret! I have gained a more toned, slender figure which I have never had before through weight training. I actually like my figure for once. Thanks to the training regime, I have the knowledge, control, motivation and drive to succeed and to never go back to how I was.

As my Fitness and Motivation hoodie says - “There’s no going back!”

David and Jamie - May 2009
Dave and Jamie - August 2009
Dave Lovell (22) and Jamie Mahoney (25)
Professional online gamblers….

Dave says…

“I've been training with mark since April 25th 2009 and im writing this on August 2nd 2009. So far I’ve lost about 2 stone and 2lbs (from 15stone 8lbs to 13stone 6lbs)

I have most enjoyed the camaraderie between Jamie Mark and myself, the constant encouragement and pats on the back that make putting that extra little bit of effort in all worth it . Alongside this has to be the improvement of my ability in each exercise, quicker rowing times, lifting heavier weights, quicker recovery time etc have all added to that feeling of self satisfaction and are almost tangible results.

During our first session with Mark, he asked us what we wanted to achieve from training and since then our training has been tailored to the basic goals we set out (weight loss, general fitness and conditioning). As a result of this and Mark constantly being interested in how we feel about results and training I feel that our sessions have always met the demands of what we are trying to achieve and I cant think of anything that I would have rather concentrated on.

I have always struggled with kettle bell training and although I can't say I look forward to doing 20 kettle swings I recognise the steady increase in weight I’ve been using and enjoy the increased strength I gain as a result!

When I first approached Mark I had very little knowledge about training and after 3 months I think vie learned a great deal. I am now far more knowledge about the benefits and effects of different nutrition, I have a basic understanding of different energy systems used during training. I now also understand the varied benefits of different intensities and types of training as well as basic knowledge about correct form and how different exercise target different muscles and muscle groups. Overall I feel that through just a basic education from Mark I am far more likely to reach any goals I set for myself in the future.

I've learnt that you cant out train bad nutrition! I've learnt a lot about the different food types, carbs, protein etc and how best to apply these types to different training. Weight loss is a major part of our goal, and ive consequently concentrated on a low carb diet with high protein intake. Protein being one of the most complex food types to break down helps to keep by body like a furnace when it comes to burning calories instead of storing them as fat, protein also aids in muscle repair and growth and is thus essential for our conditioning training. I've also learnt about the mental and physical benefits of keeping my energy levels steady through regularly eating the slow release foods (brown pasta etc) and not experiencing the peeks and troughs that used to occur on my previous diet of fast food!

Before I started training with mark I had trouble sleeping and was low in self confidence. I was also quiet sporty when in school and thus recognised how unfit I had become, this as well as my physical appearance contributed to me generally feeling down! Training has become a hobby for me, I look forward to going to the gym and seeing Mark who has become a friend as well as a trainer. Alongside the social benefits of going to the gym are the results, which im delighted with, both in appearance and general fitness. I now sleep like a baby every night, and my self confidence has rocketed! My old clothes all fit and I can’t wait to lose the next pound or go up an extra weight on the bench press! Training has also provided me with an excellent form of stress relief from a fairly high intensity job, it allows me to switch off for an hour a day and leave work in the office.

Mark understands fully what Jamie and I are trying to achieve, and he has the knowledge and motivational skills to get us where we want. I really can't thank mark enough for the guidance and motivation he’s provided, I’m the happiest vie ever been and attribute so much of the gains we have made to Mark, his energy, enthusiasm and genuine delight at your progress make it all so much more rewarding as well as sustainable! Thanks Mark!”

Jamie says…..
“I started with Mark 3 months ago. So far I have lost 15kg (over 30lbs!)
I've enjoyed learning from Mark, when I first started with him I didn't know much regarding fitness training or nutrition so taking everything he teaches me on-board has really help improve fitness and most importantly lose weight and keep it off!!

As I see the training as long term rather then a short term fix for weight loss there is nothing I felt we could've concentrated on more as all the goals that we set out in the beginning are being met within the time scales we discuss.

When I first started the shock of the training isn’t a great feeling but as I got use to it and could see myself improving I started looking forward to training and trying to better myself each session

I feel like I have more energy in everyday life. I wake up in the mornings and don't see getting out of bed a hassle (I sleep much better now)!!

Mark is a great personal trainer whose enthusiasm can’t help but rub off on you. He's very good at assessing your limits and and weaknesses and improving them steadily. I can’t recommend mark enough if your thinking of working with a personal trainer, he's always full of energy and really easy to get on with!!

Sara Gibbs – Teacher (Formerly of Pontcanna – Cardiff)

“Marks advice given during the sessions about nutrition and exercise has been excellent and I have really enjoyed talking to someone that is so enthusiastic and knowledgeable on the topic.

I was introduced to interval training and have been amazed at the effects this has on overall fitness. Sessions always involve a range of exercises and I never get bored.

I don’t particularly enjoy ‘core’ exercises, as this is my weakest area and I find them very difficult and painful! However, I was introduced to them slowly and I have seen the benefits and although I won’t ever be a ‘core queen’ I try to incorporate them into daily routines now with the hope of getting stronger.

I have been training for 8 months and have lost approximately 7lbs. I did lose almost a stone, but due to other things going on in my life I didn’t always follow the nutrition plan. As Mark always says ‘you can’t out-train bad nutrition’, so if you want to lose weight you have got to be committed to eating well.

I thought I knew about nutrition before starting the sessions, but I have learnt about when to eat and what to eat when and how to balance proteins and carbohydrates. I now have a much more balanced healthy diet and know how to adapt my eating patterns according to what activity I’m doing.

My quality of life has improved dramatically. When starting with Mark I had very high blood pressure that was being monitored by the doctor. Within the first 2 months of training it was back down within the ‘normal’ range. I feel much healthier, I have less ailments, my body feels stronger and I am able to keep up with friends when out walking, skiing etc. I used to hate running, but now feel confident in going out whenever I feel like it and I no longer worry about whether other people are looking at me!

I actually enjoy exercising – going to the gym was always a chore for me, but Mark has shown me that there are other ways to exercise”.

Darren Williams (41) Commercial Manager

The best part of the personal training for me is the variation of exercises. Although I have struggled to maintain the CV work through injury, I have still been able to train pretty hard using body weight and free weight exercises. It really has shown me that you don't need to run to have a good CV workout.

There are exercises which I do not necessarily enjoy but the benefit that they bring means that I still want to do them. Overall, although it may seem a little masochistic, the tougher the training session, the more I enjoy.

The biggest lesson for me is how important diet is in the training regime. It's impossible to reach your goal without your diet being right, no matter how hard you train

I am sure that everyone struggles with the discipline of a good diet (there are lots of temptations out there!) but it really is worth working on it. When I have my bad diet days I can really feel the difference compared with days when my diet is right and I take on the water I need. I think I am still having too may bad days at the moment but I'm working on it.

It's hard to come up with suggestions for improvement when I look forward to the training sessions so much and I now count you, Mark, as a friend rather than just a trainer. You continually push me but you never push too far. You care about all of your client's progress and always offer the support they need to keep going. I guess a good summary of how I feel about our sessions can be summed up by the fact that I start the sessions totally stressed, with the weight of the world on my shoulders and by the time I finish the session I am ready to take the world head on and it had better watch out!

Dan Mills - Radio Presenter (Formerly of Red Dragon FM)

I enjoyed the energy, enthusiasm and dedication that Mark put into each session. Mark was also very thorough in explaining what exercises we were doing, why and how they were specific to my goals.

Mate, a big thanks to you, I can now fit into old clothes have more energy and never thought I would complete a 10k race -but with your help and belief am delighted to say I did it!

Keep doing what you are doing, I loved our sessions, you pushed me hard but it was always fun!! Let me know when your free to come down to the South Coast for a few beers !!

Pablo Janczur (42) Company Director www.push4group.com

I enjoy the variety of each session, pushing myself, getting fitter and hangin' with ma man Mark.

I like the fact that I now have increased energy levels, can fit into old clothes and have the motivation to also do exercise on my own.

I also really enjoy the Bootcamp, as it's a great chance to meet other clients, work as a team and have a laugh. Keep it up buddy...

Martin Donnelly – Priest – Cardiff East

“In six months ive lost 10lbs of fat safely, gained muscle and lots more energy which is great for the job I do.
I like the fact that my sessions are realistic to the goals set out and that I don’t feel threatened by the routine.
I’ve learnt how to pace myself, listen to my body and eat according to my requirements.

I love the boot camp’s as an extra blast and to see how you fair up against other clients. Working out with Ketttlebells is tiring but fun and sometimes bruising and I can’t believe I can now squat 90kg.

If I’ve disliked anything it would have to be jump squats but I know they are a great form of exercise so bring ‘em on!
On the nutritional side of things ive learnt that it is necessary to feed your body what it needs and that a properly fed body can be a very fit & active one. It’s all about balance and doesn’t have to be dull”.

Rachel Bowen –Project Officer - Splott

“I enjoy the fact that every week is different so I don’t get bored doing the same thing.  I also like having a really hard workout every week which I would never do on my own, I like this challenge.

When I met Mark I explained my goals were to improve both my 10k and half marathon times. Through Marks gruelling interval (which actually boosts endurance) runs I have already taken at least five minutes off both.

Definitely the best thing I did in 2008 and enjoying it thus far in 09!”

Rachel Nicholson – Comic – www.slowgenius.co.uk

“Mark’s enthusiasm and positive attitude and new and fun ways of exercising e.g.theTyre Flip challenge, has made my sessions challenging and enjoyable.

I don’t like that darn bicep curl machine. Not a big fan of lunges and squats but glad I’ve done them once they are over.

I have learned about interval and pyramid training and drop sets, different ways of exercising and different types of muscles (although the names escape me currently…better drink some water and wake up my brain!)

With regards nutrition, I have learnt that the car (body) needs to be filled up at the start of the day and topped up at lunch and that therefore a balanced diet starting with breakfast is essential.

Abbie and Nina Skene – Cardiff

Abbie says “Mark, just wanted to say a massive thank you for your help and motivation over the last 6 weeks. I'm sure you've got some sort of hyperactivity disorder being so "up" all the time but it was just what we needed to keep us on track. I shall be hitting the Cyprus beaches bikini ready! Thanks again and look forward to continuing the good work when we get back xx”

Joanne Grout (22) – Newcastle

Hi Mark,

I don’t know if you can remember but I spoke to you on the phone back in February after reading the sports diploma article in the Daily Mail. You gave me some sound advice on becoming a personal trainer. After the phone call with you, it really made my mind up that it was something I really wanted to do.

I’ve now left work and am 5 weeks in on the intensive course in Bournemouth; I have passed my level 2 and 3 gym instructor and have an ETM exam next week. I am really enjoying it and know it’s the best decision I have ever made. No regrets what so ever.

I just wanted to say thanks, your call was inspirational to me and I hope that when I’m finished on the course I can be as much of a success as you have become.

Thanks again
Joanne

Amy Wadge – www.amywadge.com (Singer, Songwriter and Radio Presenter BBC Radio Wales)

“I contacted Fitness and Motivation after having my first child six months earlier, desperately wanting to get my fitness and body back. Despite being a keen long distance runner, Mark, who also shares the same passion as I do, explained to me the importance of weight training and interval cardio training for sustainable fat loss and improved body composition.

Mark also explained the importance of inch loss over weight loss which took some time for me to get my head around. However I now understand that working out with weights actually builds muscle which weighs more than fat, and that the more muscle you have the more calories your burn at rest, which results in inch loss!

Mark has giving me the motivation to work hard and push myself harder than I would on my own and in just a few months I have lost 11 cm from my waist and 9lbs of fat and my legs are toned from all the lunges and squats!

The Train Station gym have also been fantastic in letting me bring my daughter Mali along whilst I train and the relaxed atmosphere has also helped to make her feel at home in her travel cot as she watches her Mummy sweat!

All in all It’s been fantastic – Mark you’re so inspirational and motivational.  Whatever I am feeling on the day I always feel positive afterwards – you should set up a boot camp you’d make a fortune !

Mark Rambler – Cardiff Bay

I began training with Mark in April and it's been a revelation! In four
months I’ve gone from a flabby, tired, self-conscious 16 stone 'blob', to a more toned, slimmer, happier 14 stone.

Mark is exactly what I needed in a personal trainer. He's enthusiastic, cheerful and able to hit the right buttons to keep me motivated.

I never thought that I’d actually be excited about going to the gym, but with Mark that's exactly what I’m like. Not only are our sessions hard but fun, but Train Station 2 where we train is also a great, relaxed environment for working out.

Another good thing about Mark is all the additional support you get.
I've benefited greatly from him developing my own tailored diet plan, suggesting newsletters for me to sign up to and getting access to Mark's Fitness and Motivation Facebook group, where I can chat with other clients and swaps tips and ideas.

I'm well on the way now to my idea weight of around 13.5 stone and I’m seeing amazing changes in my physique. This is the happiest I’ve been in both mind and body in years.

Thanks Mark. You're also now a good friend.

Johnathon Martin (23) – Lakeside

“I started training with Mark a few months back just to get out of the house more and lose some weight. I was in a bad car accident as a child, spent time in a coma, then wheelchair having to learn how to walk and talk again. My doctor told me I needed to strengthen my knee and work on my core stability.

I have been training twice a week with Mark since April 08 and have so far lost a stone of fat – Mark told me I wouldn’t have lost any muscle as all we have done is weight – training. Im not very good at CV but im getting better and always enjoy boxing at the end of our sessions.

I’ve recently gained the confidence to start a Kung Fu class and go twice a week – this along with my training is really improving my all round fitness and I enjoy trying out my new kicks and punches on Mark!

Lately, Mark has let my younger cousin Joey, who is 14 and needs to lose some weight, join in on our sessions and he is really enjoying it”

Rania Mohammed – Cardiff Bay

“When I met Mark, I told him I wanted to lose around a stone initially and then see where it went from there. In 20 sessions spread over three months I lost a stone and a half and have since joined the ‘Train Station 2’ gym and taken my total loss to 25lbs!

Mark tailored a fitness training workout in such a way as to make my body adapt to the exercise activities in order to achieve my goals. He also told me just how important nutrition is and gave me tips on eating right which helped to shed the extra pounds faster. Now I feel happy with the way I look and have become really confident.
I get a lot of compliments from friends and family who tell me how good I look. I really love shopping now and this was something I have always struggled with because I’d never find something that fits!!

I just want to thank Mark for everything he has done, he made me love Fitness and the gym and this is something I did not expect at all. He is a brilliant personal trainer as he really cares about his clients and treats them as friends and that motivated me to give a %110.

Molly Melhuish – Pilates Teacher – Cathays

“I trained with Mark for a few months whilst preparing for the Marathon des Sables – a 7 day event in the Moroccan Desert. Whilst I can’t say I looked forward to the sessions as I was always pushed extremely hard, I found my strength and endurance increased a lot which in turn helped me in the competition. Myself and my daughter continue to train with Mark”

Rich Shaw - Thornhill

“I really enjoy and look forward to my “important meeting” on a Friday, as it always motivates me to exercise over the weekend and the week ahead. I always feel as if I have had a whole body workout afterwards, as we always do a mixture of weights and cardio.

The best thing is that every session/week is different, which means that I don’t get bored. It also means that when I go to the gym on my own, I use some of the ideas that you have given me, during my own sessions.

Over the last year, I feel that my fitness levels have improved a great deal. The biggest break-through is that you have given me the confidence and motivation to go out running outside on my own and also with my colleague when we are working away.  This is something that I would never have done or enjoyed previously! (I probably haven’t told you this, but I am running the Cardiff 10k on July 26!!) You have also given me confidence to use free-weights at the gym and also use machines that I have never used before.

Every session is specific to my goals. I am looking for my once-a-week motivational (kick-up-the-backside) session, and you always deliver!! I always feel motivated after the sessions to go to the gym again, even if I ache a little!

Just wanted to say thank you!!”

Greig Stewart - London

“I worked out with Mark for 8 weeks whilst on business in Cardiff and I really enjoyed the energy the sessions gave me. Although I found it hard at first I felt really focused in work afterwards. The weight training was not my idea of fun, especially squats – but Mark explained the benefits of doing so and I lost around 8lbs and reduced my body fat which is what I originally set out to do. Mark and I had fun, talking about football in between sets and I would definitely use him again if I return to Cardiff”

Damien Davis (43) – Businessman - Australia.

Mark says “I had the pleasure of working with Damien for just 6 weeks in May/June 2008 whilst here was here on business. He was looking for a real kick start to a healthier lifestyle after become consumed with worry about cardiac problems. We trained between 3 and 4 times a week and it was great to see his marked progress! You can see by his comments he’s a new man!!

Damien says…

”Mate....What a few weeks it has been!
I just wanted to say how much I have enjoyed your company and your effort in helping me achieve my goals. You really don't know what you’re going to get when you sign on with a personal trainer. Back in Oz it’s a bit of a lucky dip and my personal experience in the gyms was they were just getting their hours up and bored to death.

Your vigor, energy and real consideration for the client’s wishes and empathy are a credit to you my friend. I have learnt some things about myself over the last week. One I will share with you... I can do it by myself. I have no excuses. I have defeated myself. Bursting across the bridge On Sunday afternoon I stopped and thought, Golly, look at you running around like someone who is serious about fitness. Well guess what. That’s me!

You have taught me this. I think back to all my training even when I was blisteringly fit (or so I thought) training 2.5 hours a day 5 days a week. I learned that I wasted sooo much time. I never went as hard as I am going now and I could have achieved a better outcome and had a lot of extra time back to do other important things. I now know I just looked fit. But, I was happy for that as I was single and a mad rooter at that!

Mate I am looking forward to going home and to finishing up our training with some real results, which are showing so patently. I am a realist. I know I have around another 6 months of work to achieve my goal and I will keep it up don’t worry.

Someone once said, "The way you were when you were young, you can get it back" It’s true. And you can keep it. But don’t think it’s for free. You can have all the cash in the world but that’s not the price. The price is in your heart, in your mind, and in your muscles. Pay... or be damned!

Thank you so much for everything!

Ya B*rstard! ;-]

Most sincerely,

Damo

Lisa Dicken (32) Thornhill

“I always look forward too and enjoy my sessions. I always work hard for the whole session and the results are clearly evident. I know that Mark is watching to ensure every exercise is being done correctly. By having my own PT coming to my home means that I don’t get out of training because I can’t be bothered to get to a gym or haven’t got time.

At our first meeting, Mark and I discussed my goal which was to lose a stone.  I’ve reached my goal in 8 weeks and my next goal is to lose a further half a stone.  The buzz was tremendous when I reached my goal.
I am totally thrilled with my new body and so is my husband.

Every exercise Mark has shown me has been beneficial and crucial to my weight loss, body toning and overall fitness.  There are elements which I found difficult just because I was so tired but I believe it was all worthwhile.

I have totally embraced a whole new way of eating.  My whole family eats healthy nutritional meals. Mark has shown me what foods to eat and what foods to avoid.  Everything in moderation, I allow myself a treat and I even occasionally have take always or we go out for a meal.

As well as looking and feeling good, health wise I am so much fitter I can keep up with the kids which is unbelievable.

All I can suggest is just keep doing what you’re doing.  Working me hard, encouraging and supporting me.  I am so grateful my figure has transformed my life I feel confident, healthy and extremely happy”.

Many Thanks!!

Jacqui Wood - Pontcanna

“I look forward to my training sessions with Mark because I know that I am going to get a great workout which is also fun, personal and varied.  Mark is very motivational, knows my limits but will push me to the top of my ability.

I have learnt a huge amount since training with Mark. I am more confident in using different methods of training e.g. weight training, interval training.  When training on my own I am able to apply what I have learnt in my PT sessions.

My main goal is weight loss and I feel my sessions have been specific to this. I trust Mark to give me the best advice both in relation to my workout technique and diet and health advice. Above all I am really pleased with the way my training has developed and hope to continue working with Mark for a good while yet!"

Gerard Powell (38) - Penarth

“Many thanks again for your work, guidance and encouragement over the last 10 weeks. I cannot tell you how much it meant to me to train in the right environment in order for me to apply myself.

Your whole approach was perfect for me and with your help I have achieved exactly what I set out to do, regain a decent level of fitness and kick on from there.

In short Mark the best feedback I can give you is when I asked myself the question; had I got value for my money? Yes, absolutely, and probably the best money I've spent in a long time, what price health and fitness eh?

Just keep the same style; it was first class, personal but not overbearing, approachable and encouraging”.

Will Evans (32) - Pontypridd

Training with Mark is so much more then just having a personal trainer, It’s like having a life coach and a cheerleader as well!

Mark is there supporting you every step of the way and not just during the training sessions, he goes the extra mile for you outside of our time together and is always available for a chat about life and stuff. When I first met Mark I was very depressed and very un-motivated.

Having worked with mark for the past 4 months I can assure you that is not the case now! I have so much more confidence, motivation and enjoy life so much more and a lot of this is down to the constant support and encouragement received from Mark. It’s for these reasons I have no hesitation in highly recommending Mark from Fitness and Motivation, although you may want to think twice about his prison circuit around the Wharf!!

Mandy Roberts – (Lisvane) Businesswoman – www.tantrick.co.uk

“I would like to thank Mark for the best kick start to exercise I have ever had in my life!
I have never been one for exercise but following a few months on the F&M personal training programme I am now confident to carry on with my exercising a couple of times a week.

I did worry about the cost of training sessions initially but this weighed up with the cost of having to purchase new clothes as I outgrew my others seemed to bring it into perspective.

I was rapidly putting on weight following a hysterectomy and had reached a size 16 and weighed nearly 12 stone, I felt like my body was stretching my skin and was very uncomfortable doing any form of physical movement.
Within 6 months of starting PT sessions, I fit into my old size 12 clothes and am now 10stone 3lbs!

Feeling fitter, healthier and with the drive to continue exercise as I know how beneficial it really is to me!
Well done Mark and thank you!”

Andrew Davies (28) – Optician (Llandaff – Cardiff)

I have been training Andy 3 times a week since May 2007, he is my biggest success story…..

Andy says….
“I’m a recovering drug addict and alcoholic who suffers from severe depression.
I started training with mark in May 2007 after leaving the ‘Priory’ with a massively reduced bank account after being told I was “cured” yet it didn’t quite work. At this time I could not leave the house, had virtually no contact with the outside world, no social life and no self-esteem, so slipped back in to the old routine of self-medication.

It was suggested to me by my psychiatrist that the effects of exercise would be beneficial to my situation and he put me in touch with mark at F&M to arrange an initial consultation. After coming off on of my self-medication binges a few days before as so not to be too intoxicated when meeting him, I was very nervous but Mark made me feel comfortable in his company.

We decided that my initial goal was just to start to feel better emotionally rather than set any physical goals and Mark started the sessions at my own pace. On the first session I was sick through the general shock to my body and told Mark that “I hated” him! Mark however was cool and convinced me I would soon start to feel better. And sure enough I began to really embrace things and just felt so good after the exercise.

Before you knew it I was rapidly losing weight, sleeping and eating better! Through the training Mark has helped me to regain lost confidence due to the fact that the exercise makes me feel mentally more balanced and my physical appearance has improved so much, that this also makes me feel amazing!

To date I have lost 2 and half stone, 20CM from my waist; I can do 54 press-ups in a minute. I now weigh 64kgs and I can now bench press 60kg and my resting Heart Rate has dropped dramatically so I’m now at less chance of developing coronary heart disease in later life.
I have a totally different life out look on life. I have finished off my qualifications and have recently found employment, working full time as a dispensing optician.

Mark is a really good bloke who is very knowledgeable about all aspects of training as he combines techniques with an anatomical explanation of the effects and benefits to fitness. But most off all, we have a laugh so you don’t even realise your training and with the variety of training it keeps it interesting. All I can say is that if you showed me my self today six months ago I would have told you where to go.

Geraint - Businessman, Cardiff.

I have been training Geraint since July 2007. He is one of the most dedicated trainers I have ever come across. We now train almost every day, be it running or weights and he tells me his fitness has never been so good.

Geraint says “The sessions are always excellent and informative and never repetitive unless absolutely necessary!
I enjoy aspects of the training even when it’s very tough and Mark’s prison circuit is not for the feint hearted!”
I’ve constantly achieved the goals we set at beginning and have learnt many new things along the way. I’ve enjoyed new types of training such as Peripheral Heart Action (involving continuous upper/lower body exercises) and rotation work for core stability
Just keep on focusing on the client 100%, keep motivating and stay inspiring. You are on the road to being the best in the business”.

Karl Dutton – Finance Manager: Pen-y-lan

I have been training Karl since April 2007. In that time he has packed on 7lbs in muscle, improved his strength and made great strides with his cardiovascular fitness.

Karl says “The enthusiasm Mark has towards exercise combined with his motivational skills has been the key ingredient in raising my personal fitness levels and continues to do so.

Mark & I talk regularly about how my training is moving forward, confirming suitability etc.  My previous trainer had a more prescriptive approach which although productive was not as interesting or enjoyable as Mark’s varied approach which has ultimately delivered far higher results in both physical/tangible and overall enjoyment terms.

For a while I was prone to injury which was frustrating. I have now been injury free for the longest time since beginning training over a year ago.

Understanding that to achieve advancement with any aspect of my training requires a balance between physical exercise and nutritional input.  Explaining the technical aspect of my training has helped me to better understand how each element relates/contributes to overall success”.

Catherine Cuthbert (53) – Lecturer (Thornhill)

“I have been training with Mark since April 2007 and I have loved all of it, but especially the freedom when we go for a run! It gives me the chance to chat away all my stress and worries!

Sometimes it is hard to train with so many constant demands on my time such as work / family needs/ visitors at last minute etc but Mark is incredibly flexible and understanding to all of this.

Added to the variety of training Mark has taught me the importance of a balanced diet and I continue to enjoy our sessions together”.

Faith Olding (32) Entrepreneur and mother – Bridgend.
Jane Powell (56) Teacher – Bridgend.

Faith says “We have been training with Mark for the past year and would like to say what a difference he has made to our lives.  Mark has patience, a wonderful manner and is the best motivator we have ever known. We are two overweight women but Mark has encouraged us to become fitter and to work on our diets. He has introduced us to boxing and core stability, which previous to meeting mark I would have thought was a type of building material!
We are now able to walk further and feel a lot stronger. He brings a wonderful type of tough love and has become a very dear friend to us both.

As a mother of three boys aged 6, 4 and 2 I never thought I would see my feet again. Mark has given me the ability to enjoy exercise and in turn promoted my positive attitude to life. He fits his training around the fact that I am an owner of three thriving business, a recruitment agency, a bathroom company and a water sports shop. He always ensures he fits my sessions in. I would like to call him a life coach. Thank you Mark and I would advise all women who feel scared of bearing their post baby bodies (in a tracksuit) to try Mark who will train you without ever making you feel self conscious. If anyone wants to chat to me directly please call me on 01656 729988 and ask for Faith.

Jane says “I am Faiths mum. I am 56 and suffer from atrial fibulation, I have also had a stroke and breast cancer. Mark has inspired me to get fitter and even though I am waiting for a double knee replacement we continue to work on my upper body. He has devised a wonderful exercise programme in conjunction with my doctor and continues to push me to achieve my potential. I enjoy nothing more than beating Mark up during our boxing sessions!
I work as a teacher and feel that a lot of my tension is relived in Mark’s sessions. I would recommend him whole-heartedly to all ladies or men looking to get fitter”.

Thank you Mark for all the wonderful work you have done for us. Women of Wales don’t let the best trainer slip away, ring him to change your lives.

Taylor Glenn – Pontcanna

I have been training Taylor 2 to 3 times a week since June 2007. Our training consists of a nice mix of long distance running, weight training in the gym, outdoor boxing, core stability and plyometrics. In this time Taylor has become much fitter (now running a 5K almost 8 minutes faster), lost body fat and increased her lean tissue.

Taylors says “I’m not easy to motivate and get discouraged easily but you’ve never given up on me. I’ve had some bad days but you’ve rolled with them!
The main thing is I would never push myself/know what to do on my own.
The long cardio stuff is the toughest – i.e., 5K – but I’ve needed to do it.

I didn’t know about core training before – and I’m definitely more gym-savvy now.

Thanks for staying positive and pushing me, and having such a good natured approach to everything.  Also – for being very “human,” rather than too formal.
Laughing during the work helps – keeps it fun!”

Caroline Rowlands – Marketing Guru – Total Training Wales

"After 10 years of yo-yo dieting I've finally found the answer in the form of Mark at F & M!  Mark's genuine enthusiasm and desire to achieve Recognizable results with his clients have been a real motivation to me. Mark's natural energy, enthusiasm, ability to motivate and recognize what will work for each client is, undoubtedly, the key to his success.  After Just 6 weeks I feel fitter and healthier than I have in a long time.  I Would recommend Mark to anyone looking to improve their fitness and increase their motivation levels, particularly those who may be nervous or lacking in confidence".

Bethan Jones - Nurse

Mark says “I met Bethan early in 2007 when she contacted me about personal training. She was training for the London Marathon and wanted to be pushed harder.

Bethan had specific goals of completing a half marathon in less than two hours and also a 10k personal best in 52 minutes which was set many years ago.
On our first training session together we ran a 10k simply to set a time and then work towards beating it over the weeks and months ahead. We did this in 51 min 36 secs, a new personal best for Bethan already! She claimed that simply by having a trainer with her she worked harder than she would have done on her own and we were off to a great start.

Bethan told me that she had an inner lazy person and so in our subsequent training sessions I challenged her to achieve more and pushed her to her limits.

Our sessions were generally outdoor at the Wharf in Cardiff Bay where we mixed distance running with intense circuit sessions to build Bethan’s overall fitness. When we used weights we worked in a high repetition range with lighter loads to aid endurance in the muscles and kept our focus on her goals.

After 5 weeks of training together Bethan ran in the Bath Half Marathon in a record time of time 1.59.10, and a week later we re ran our 10k and beat her personal best by finishing in 49 min, 50 secs.

So progress all round and we continue to train, setting new goals and challenging Bethan to better them each time”.

Bethan says “What I enjoyed most about my PT sessions were being motivated and pushed to my limits I'm really chuffed with sub 50min 10k, would never have dreamt I could do that! I have learnt that I am capable of more than I believe I am. It has also been interesting to learn more about nutrition, for instance I never knew eating carbohydrates before training enables the body to burn more fuel”.

With a busy lifestyle, and numerous weekday and weekend commitments already as well as a young family and a 100 mile commute to work each day, training for the London Marathon was always going to be as much about administration as it was about physical and mental training for the event itself. With 2 previous London Marathons, 8 years Commissioned Officer Service in the Royal Marines behind me and a strong will to succeed regardless of the challenge, I wanted to pay for the services of a Personal Fitness Trainer to take some of the responsibility for organising my training away from myself.

Meeting Mark and learning how he did business was a revelation for me and without interruption I was quickly into the ‘zone’ I needed to be in which was balancing progressive physical upper body training with my Marathon running programme, a balanced diet and rest, whilst appreciating the wider field of the fitness business. Things had moved on since the days where I felt there wasn’t much anyone else could teach me that I didn’t know already, and it was fantastic to learn new techniques which now hit the core muscles in new ways whilst lessening the injury potential compared to the ‘old days’.

Having your conscience with you during a training session is a fantastic experience because with his focus completely on balancing the physical activities and meeting the goals which you have already sat down and agreed, you can then set about taking that journey through the programme that will get you there. All you need to do is turn up because Mark’s Fitness and Motivation level is enough for you both of you during that session.

Knowing what you have achieved (because the evidence has been recorded), and being able to use that going forward to structure the programme within the timeframe that you agree with Mark is testament to the fact that he is very much in tune for what is best for you and isn’t a slave to the programme which you now want to modify.

If you are in any doubt about your potential to achieve a goal within a timeframe – as long as it is a realistic one, or need an additional source of motivation to guide you along the road that will get you there, do what I did and invest in the professional knowledge of a Personal Trainer – but not anyone! Speak now to your new conscience who goes by the name of Mark Tregilgas – Fitness and Motivation Personal Training.
